Bob King (labor leader)
Bob King is a labor leader who has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of workers across the United States. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, on April 5, 1943, to parents who were both active in the labor movement. King’s father was a member of the United Auto Workers (UAW) and his mother was a schoolteacher. He has two sisters.
King was educated in the Detroit public schools and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Wayne State University. He began his career as a community organizer in Detroit’s inner city. In 1968, he became a staff member of the UAW.
King rose through the ranks of the UAW, becoming its first African American vice president in 1998. He has been a driving force behind many of the union’s major initiatives, including its successful campaign to unionize workers at Honda’s plants in the United States.
Under King’s leadership, the UAW has also worked to improve conditions for workers at auto parts suppliers and to organize workers in the South. He has been a vocal advocate for raising the minimum wage and for expanding access to health care and other benefits.
King is married to Lillian Roberts, a former UAW staff member. They have two children.
In 2010, King was elected president of the AFL-CIO, the largest federation of labor unions in the United States. He has served in this role since then, working to build unity among the country’s unions and to fight for policies that will improve the lives of workers.
King is a passionate and effective leader who has devoted his life to improving the lot of workers in the United States. He has been instrumental in many major advances for unions and workers, and he continues to fight for a better future for all working people.
