William “Bill” Cobbs is an American actor. He has appeared in numerous films and television shows throughout his career.

Cobbs was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on January 16, 1934. His parents were both African American. He has four siblings. Cobbs was educated at the Cleveland Public Schools and the University of Michigan.
Cobbs began his acting career in the late 1950s. He appeared in several Off-Broadway productions in the 1960s. In 1968, he made his Broadway debut in The Mighty Gents. He also appeared in the film version of The Mighty Gents in 1978.
Cobbs’ film credits include The Brother from Another Planet (1984), The Color Purple (1985), The Hudsucker Proxy (1994), and The Shawshank Redemption (1994). He has also appeared in television shows such as The Cosby Show, Miami Vice, and The West Wing.
Cobbs has been married three times. He has four children.
