Big Sean was born Sean Michael Leonard Anderson on March 25, 1988, in Santa Monica, California. His mother, Myra Anderson, is a schoolteacher, and his father, James Anderson, is a former rapper who goes by the name “Big Sean” (hence Sean’s stage name). Sean has two older sisters, Ashley and Stephanie. Sean’s parents divorced when he was three years old, and he was raised by his mother in Detroit, Michigan.
Sean attended the Detroit Waldorf School and graduated from Cass Technical High School with a 3.7 GPA. He was a good student and was active in sports and music. Sean was a member of the track team and played basketball. He also played the piano and drums.
After high school, Sean attended the University of Michigan on a full scholarship. He planned to major in film studies, but he dropped out after one semester to pursue a career in music.
Sean’s career began when he met Kanye West at a radio station in Detroit. Kanye was impressed with Sean’s rapping skills and signed him to his record label, GOOD Music. Sean’s debut album, Finally Famous, was released in 2011. The album peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified gold by the RIAA.
Sean’s second album, Hall of Fame, was released in 2013. The album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum by the RIAA.
In 2015, Sean released his third album, Dark Sky Paradise. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and was certified double platinum by the RIAA.
Sean has also released several mixtapes, including Finally Famous Vol. 3: Big (2010), Detroit (2012), and Hall of Fame 2 (2013).
In addition to his solo work, Sean has collaborated with several other artists, including Drake, Nicki Minaj, Eminem, and Lil Wayne. He has also appeared on television shows such as Saturday Night Live and The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
Sean is currently dating singer Jhené Aiko. The couple has one child together, a daughter named Aiko (born in December 2016).
