Art Metrano is an American actor, comedian, and writer. He is best known for his role as Detective Sgt. Tony Scali on the television series Police Squad! and for his appearances in the films Airplane!, The Naked Gun, and Beverly Hills Cop II.
Metrano was born in Brooklyn, New York, on September 15, 1936. His parents, Joseph and Mary Metrano, were both Italian immigrants. He has two brothers, Frank and Joseph Jr., and a sister, Rosemarie. Metrano attended Brooklyn Technical High School and graduated in 1954. He then studied engineering at Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, but left after one year to pursue a career in comedy.
Metrano began his career as a stand-up comedian in the early 1960s. He appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and The Ed Sullivan Show. He also had roles on the television series The Love Boat and Fantasy Island. In 1982, he was cast as Detective Sgt. Tony Scali on the police comedy series Police Squad!. The show was cancelled after six episodes, but Metrano’s performance was well-received.
In 1988, Metrano appeared in the film Beverly Hills Cop II. He also had roles in the films Airplane! (1980), The Naked Gun (1988), and Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star (2003).
Metrano has been married three times. His first wife was actress Barbara Rush, with whom he had a son, Andrew. His second wife was actress Linda Gray, with whom he had a daughter, Cristina. He is currently married to actress Nancy Morgan.
