Sui was born in Detroit, Michigan, to John Sui, a Chinese-American engineer, and Grace Sui, a Japanese-American homemaker. She has four sisters and a brother. Sui’s parents encouraged her to pursue her love of fashion from an early age.
Sui began her career working for several fashion magazines in New York City. She eventually launched her own line of clothing in 1991. Her designs have been worn by celebrities such as Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, and Gwen Stefani.
