Albert King (born Albert Nelson on April 25, 1923 in Indianola, Mississippi) was an American blues singer and guitar player. He is best known for his hit records “Born Under a Bad Sign” (1967) and “Crosscut Saw” (1972).

King was born the youngest of 13 children. His father, Will Nelson, was a sharecropper and his mother, Julia Mae Nelson, was a domestic worker. King began playing the guitar at the age of seven and by the time he was nine he had already begun performing at local parties and picnics.

King left home at the age of 15 and began touring with various blues and gospel bands. He eventually settled in Memphis, Tennessee, where he began his recording career. His first hit record, “Born Under a Bad Sign”, was released in 1967.

Over the next few years, King released a number of successful albums and singles, including “Crosscut Saw” and “The Sky is Crying”. He also toured extensively, performing with such artists as B.B. King, Stevie Wonder, and Eric Clapton.

In the early 1980s, King’s health began to decline and he was forced to cut back on his touring and recording commitments. He died of a heart attack on December 21, 1992, at the age of 69.

At the time of his death, King was estimated to have a net worth of $5 million.
