Albert J. Beveridge was born on October 6, 1862, in Highland County, Ohio. His parents were both of English descent. His father was a farmer and his mother was a homemaker. He had four brothers and one sister. He was educated in the public schools of Ohio and Indiana. He graduated from Indiana Asbury University (now DePauw University) in 1885 and from Harvard Law School in 1888.
Beveridge began his legal career in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was elected to the Indiana General Assembly in 1892. He served in the United States Senate from 1899 to 1911. He was a leader of the Progressive movement in the Senate. He was an advocate for the expansion of the United States military and for the annexation of the Philippines.
Beveridge retired from the Senate in 1911. He returned to his law practice in Indianapolis. He died on April 27, 1927, in Indianapolis.
Beveridge was a member of the Republican Party. He was a supporter of Theodore Roosevelt and his Progressive policies. He was a critic of Woodrow Wilson and his foreign policy.
Beveridge was married twice. His first wife was Louise Mitchell. They were married for 17 years and had three children together. His second wife was Margaret Woodrow Wilson, the daughter of President Woodrow Wilson. They were married for 10 years and had no children together.
