Wilson Pickett (March 18, 1941 – January 19, 2006) was an American singer and songwriter. A major figure in the development of American soul music, Pickett recorded over 50 songs which made the US Billboard Hot 100 during his career.

Born and raised in Prattville, Alabama, Pickett was the fourth of 11 children. His father was a Baptist minister and his mother a homemaker. Pickett showed an early interest in music, singing in his church choir. He was inspired to pursue a career in music after seeing Elvis Presley perform in 1955.

Pickett began his career as a member of the Falcons, a rhythm and blues group. He achieved success as a solo artist with his debut single, “In the Midnight Hour”, which reached number one on the Billboard R&B chart. He followed this with a string of hits including “Mustang Sally” and “Land of 1,000 Dances”.

During his career, Pickett worked with a number of notable musicians including Steve Cropper, Duane Allman, and Aretha Franklin. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991.

Pickett died of a heart attack in 2006. He was survived by his wife, two daughters, and four grandchildren.
