William Schallert (born July 22, 1922) is an American actor who has appeared in more than 400 television shows and movies in a career spanning over 70 years. He is perhaps best known for his role as Martin Lane on The Patty Duke Show, which earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Series in 1964.

Born in Los Angeles, California, Schallert was the only child of Edwin Schallert, a newspaper drama critic, and his wife, Elza. He was exposed to the theater at an early age and often accompanied his father to rehearsals and opening nights. His first acting role was as a child in a production of The Wizard of Oz.

Schallert’s first professional acting role was in a production of Our Town at the La Jolla Playhouse in 1940. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and then attended the University of California, Los Angeles on the G.I. Bill. He graduated with a degree in theater arts in 1947.

Schallert’s first television appearance was on an episode of Suspense in 1949. He went on to appear in hundreds of television shows, including The Twilight Zone, Gunsmoke, Perry Mason, The Fugitive, Bonanza, The Waltons, and Seinfeld. He also appeared in films such as The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957), In the Heat of the Night (1967), and The Poseidon Adventure (1972).

In 1964, Schallert won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Series for his role as Martin Lane on The Patty Duke Show. He later reprised the role in the 1985 made-for-television movie The Patty Duke Show: A Royal Family.

Schallert has been married twice. His first marriage, to actress Nancy Gates, ended in divorce. His second marriage, to actress Leah Waggner, lasted from 1977 until her death in 2006. He has three children from his first marriage and one from his second.

At 96 years old, Schallert is one of the oldest working actors in Hollywood. He continues to appear in television shows and movies, most recently appearing in an episode of NCIS: Los Angeles in 2018.

Quotes

#Quote
1[on Patty Duke going public with her bipolar disorder] She was one of the pioneers who stuck her neck out so to speak to say "here I am" at a time where people didn't do that. She had the courage to do it and she did a lot of good, I think, by doing that and by the rest of her life by example.
2[on Patty Duke] When I think of her, she's family as far as I'm concerned. We had a very close relationship. Whenever I saw her it was like greeting one of my kids. She just had a wonderful quality and I got to know her over the years and she was admirable in a lot of ways. She really did her best to raise her own kids and she certainly had very little help in her own life to do that, but she was very mature and she did a lot of growing up very fast. People take that kind of thing for granted far too easily, and she doesn't get the credit she deserves for that.
3I've never been single-minded in my pursuit of acting as a career. Whatever it was that got me hired and kept me working was probably just me.
4I believe you shouldn't become an actor unless you need to. Unless you have no choice about it. Liking--even loving--acting is not enough. You have to need to act.
