William Herbert Hunt was born on August 17, 1932, in El Dorado, Arkansas, to L.E. and Lyda Hunt. He had two brothers, Lamar and Nelson, and a sister, Helen. His father was a successful oilman, and the family was very wealthy. William attended public schools in El Dorado and then went on to attend the University of Arkansas. He graduated with a degree in business in 1954.
After graduation, Hunt went to work for his father’s oil company. He quickly proved himself to be a very successful businessman, and by the early 1960s he was running the company. The company was extremely successful, and Hunt became one of the richest men in the world.
In 1966, Hunt decided to get into politics, and he ran for the U.S. Senate from Texas. He won the election, and served in the Senate for six years. In 1972, he ran for the Republican nomination for president, but he lost to Richard Nixon.
After leaving the Senate, Hunt returned to the oil business. He continued to be very successful, and by the early 1980s he was once again one of the richest men in the world.
In 1983, Hunt was indicted on charges of conspiracy and tax fraud. He was convicted of the charges in 1988, and sentenced to four years in prison. He served two years of his sentence before being released on parole.
After his release from prison, Hunt returned to the oil business. He has since retired from active involvement in the business, but he remains a major shareholder in his family’s company.
Hunt is married to Caroline Rose Hunt. The couple has four children: Lyda, Helen, Lamar, and Nelson.
Hunt is estimated to have a net worth of $2 billion.
