William Dufty (1926-2007) was an American journalist and author. He is best known for his 1976 book Sugar Blues, which critiqued the overconsumption of sugar and advocated for a sugar-free diet.

Dufty was born in Detroit, Michigan, on October 23, 1926. His parents were both journalists; his father was a newspaper editor and his mother was a society columnist. Dufty had two older sisters.

Dufty was educated at private schools in Detroit and New York City. He briefly attended Princeton University before dropping out to pursue a career in journalism.

Dufty began his career as a reporter for the New York Daily News. He later worked as a publicist for various celebrities, including Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday. In the early 1970s, Dufty began writing articles about nutrition and health. These articles led to the publication of his book Sugar Blues in 1976.

The book was a bestseller, and helped to popularize the idea of a sugar-free diet. Dufty continued to write about health and nutrition throughout his career, authoring several more books on the subject.

Dufty was married three times. His first marriage, to actress Judy Garland, lasted from 1952 to 1965. Dufty’s second marriage, to model Cicely Tyson, lasted from 1966 to 1969. Dufty’s third and final marriage was to journalist Barbara Goldsmith; the couple remained married until Dufty’s death in 2007.

Dufty had three children: Liza Minnelli, with Judy Garland; Christopher Dufty, with Cicely Tyson; and Amy Goldsmith, with Barbara Goldsmith.

Dufty died of natural causes at his home in New York City on March 11, 2007. He was survived by his three children and his wife, Barbara Goldsmith.
