Wendy Craig, née Wendy Jane Horsfall, is an English actress, best known for her roles in the sitcoms Butterflies and Ever Decreasing Circles.

Craig was born on 20 October 1934 in Sacriston, County Durham, the daughter of an engineer. She was educated at a local girls’ grammar school and then at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Her first professional role was in a production of The Importance of Being Earnest at the Theatre Royal, York. She went on to appear in repertory theatre and on television, including parts in The Avengers, Z-Cars and The Saint.

In 1975, Craig was cast as Ria Parkin in Butterflies, a sitcom about a housewife who yearns for more excitement in her life. The show was a huge success, running for three series and spawning a spin-off series, Butterflies Again.

In 1983, Craig starred in Ever Decreasing Circles, another successful sitcom, this time about a middle-aged man who becomes obsessed with trying to improve his neighbourhood. The show ran for five series and made Craig a household name.

Craig has also appeared in a number of films, including The Railway Children (1970), Yentl (1983) and An American Werewolf in London (1981).

In recent years, Craig has appeared on stage in productions of The Importance of Being Earnest (2002), Calendar Girls (2009) and The Sound of Music (2010).

Craig has been married twice, first to actor Jeremy Bulloch and then to writer and producer Richard Bates. She has three children.

Craig’s net worth is estimated to be £3 million.
