Vilhjalmur Stefansson was born in Arnes, Manitoba, Canada on November 3, 1879. His parents were Icelandic immigrants. He had six siblings. He attended the University of Manitoba and then the University of Copenhagen. He became interested in the Arctic while in university and made several trips there for research.
He led an expedition to the Arctic in 1913 and another in 1918. He wrote several books about his experiences in the Arctic. In 1921, he married Evelyn Stefansson. They had two children.
He died on August 26, 1962.
