Van Morrison, OBE (born George Ivan Morrison; 31 August 1945) is a Northern Irish singer-songwriter, instrumentalist and record producer. His professional career began as a teenager in the late 1950s playing a variety of instruments including guitar, harmonica, keyboards and saxophone for various Irish showbands, covering a wide range of musical styles. Morrison signed with Bert Berns’ Bang Records in New York City in 1967, where he was marketed as a white soul singer. Berns also oversaw the recording of Morrison’s debut album, Blowin’ Your Mind! (1967).

Morrison’s next two albums, Astral Weeks (1968) and Moondance (1970), established him as a major artist in rock and roll and the premier singer-songwriter of his generation. George Ivan Morrison was born on 31 August 1945, at 125 Hyndford Street, Bloomfield, Belfast, Northern Ireland. His father, George Morrison, was a shipyard electrician and Protestant unionist. His mother, Violet Stitt Morrison, was a housewife and a Catholic from Derry. Morrison has two sisters, Ellen and Mary, and a brother, George Jr., who was killed in an accident at age four while Morrison was still a child.
Morrison was raised in a predominantly Protestant neighbourhood and attended Belfast High School. He began playing guitar when he was nine years old and started his professional career as a teenager, playing a variety of instruments including guitar, harmonica, keyboards and saxophone for various Irish showbands. He was influenced by the American rock and roll of Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley as well as the British Invasion led by the Beatles.
In 1963, Morrison joined Them, a Belfast-based band fronted by lead singer Van Morrison. The band released several successful singles including “Gloria” and “Baby Please Don’t Go”. They also became one of the first bands to tour the United States with a black musician, saxophonist Alan Henderson.
In 1967, Morrison moved to New York City and signed with Bert Berns’ Bang Records. Berns also oversaw the recording of Morrison’s debut album, Blowin’ Your Mind! The album’s first single, “Brown Eyed Girl”, was a major hit, reaching number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
After the release of Blowin’ Your Mind!, Morrison toured the United States and Europe with Them. The band’s live performances were often marred by Morrison’s erratic behaviour. He reportedly threw punches at audience members who heckled him and walked off stage on several occasions. In 1968, Morrison returned to the studio to record his second album, Astral Weeks. The album was a critical and commercial success, reaching number 28 on the Billboard 200 chart.
In 1970, Morrison released his third album, Moondance. The album was another critical and commercial success, reaching number 29 on the Billboard 200 chart. It included the single “Into the Mystic”, which became one of Morrison’s signature songs.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Morrison continued to record and tour. He achieved limited commercial success outside of his native Ireland and the United Kingdom.
