Lee was born Thomas Lee Bass on October 3, 1962, in Athens, Greece, the son of American parents, David Lee Bass, a drummer, and Vassilikki “Voula” Papadimitriou (maiden name), a model. His father was of English, German, and Irish descent, while his mother was Greek. He has a younger sister, Athena Lee, who was also a drummer in Mötley Crüe and is now a DJ.
Lee’s parents divorced when he was four years old and he was raised by his mother in California. He received his first drum when he was four years old and his first drum kit when he was a teenager. He attended high school in Newport Beach and played in several local bands, including Suite 19 and White Horse.
Lee’s career began in 1981 when he joined Mötley Crüe. The band’s debut album, Too Fast for Love, was released in November 1981. The band achieved success with their second album, Shout at the Devil, which was released in September 1983. The album reached number four on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
Mötley Crüe’s third album, Theatre of Pain, was released in June 1985. It peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum by the RIAA. The band’s fourth album, Girls, Girls, Girls, was released in May 1987 and reached number two on the Billboard 200. The album was certified quadruple platinum by the RIAA.

In 1992, Lee formed the heavy metal band Methods of Madness with guitarist Mick Mars. The band’s only album, Shout at the Devil ’97, was released in 1997 and featured a cover of the Mötley Crüe song of the same name.
In 2006, Lee formed the supergroup Rock Star Supernova with guitarist Gilby Clarke and bassist Jason Newsted. The band’s only album, Rock Star Supernova, was released in 2006 and reached number seven on the Billboard 200.
