Thomas Jacob “Tommy” Hilfiger (born March 24, 1951) is an American fashion designer, philanthropist, and business executive, best known for founding the lifestyle brand Tommy Hilfiger Corporation in 1985. After starting his career by co-founding a chain of jeanswear and retail stores in upstate New York in the 1970s, he began designing his own line of clothing for men and women in the 1980s. The Tommy Hilfiger Corporation went public in 1992 and was acquired by PVH in 2010.

Hilfiger was born in Elmira, New York, the second of nine children. His father, Richard Hilfiger, was a watchmaker of Dutch-German descent, and his mother, Virginia (née Grissinger), was a nurse of Irish-German ancestry. Hilfiger’s parents divorced when he was eighteen years old. He grew up in an impoverished household, sharing a bedroom with his four brothers and three sisters. His siblings are: Kathy, Lisa, Mark, Nancy, Amy, Jane, and Susan.
Hilfiger’s father died of a heart attack when Tommy was eighteen years old. His mother worked two jobs to support the family; she was a nurse during the day and cleaned houses at night. Hilfiger’s upbringing instilled him with a strong work ethic; he has said that his mother “raised us all to be very independent and to have good work ethics.”
Hilfiger’s interest in fashion began when he was thirteen years old, when he worked after school at a local clothing store, Irving’s Menswear. He soon began working at another clothing store, A&S Plaza, where he eventually became the head buyer. At age sixteen, Hilfiger enrolled in classes at Elmira College, but he dropped out after one semester and moved to New York City to pursue a career in fashion.
In 1970, Hilfiger co-founded People’s Place, a chain of jeanswear and retail stores with his childhood friend Joel Horowitz. The first store was opened in upstate New York. People’s Place was successful for several years but eventually filed for bankruptcy in 1977.

In 1979, Hilfiger moved to New York City to pursue a career in fashion design. He worked as a designer for various fashion labels including Jordache Jeans and Calvin Klein before launching his own label in 1985.
The Tommy Hilfiger Corporation went public in 1992 with an initial public offering of $14 per share. The company’s stock price peaked at $37 per share in 1999 but fell to a low of $6 per share in 2001 following the 9/11 attacks and the dot-com crash. In 2010, the company was acquired by PVH for $3 billion.
Hilfiger has been married three times. His first marriage was to Susie Cirona from 1976 to 1980. His second marriage was to Dee Ocleppo from 2008 to 2009. He has been married to Lisa Airan since 2016. He has five children: Ally, Rich, Sebastian, India, and Gabriel.
Hilfiger has a net worth of $550 million as of 2020. He has earned his fortune through his successful fashion label as well as through investments in real estate and other businesses.

1 | [on no longer chairing the Board of his company] It's liberating in that I don't have to be in meetings every single day. But I miss it because I'm sort of a control freak and I would like to be able to make the decisions on every color of every button and on every person we hire. |
2 | When I see people wearing floral prints, I think they really don't have great taste. Why would you want to wear a print that you see on a bedspread or wallpaper in an older person's home? |
3 | Clothes aren't going to go out of style, ever. So he who has the most attractive offering at the right price at the right time in the right place will remain in business. |
