Schweiger was born in Freiburg, West Germany, on December 19, 1963. His parents were Hans Schweiger, a doctor, and Irene Schweiger, a kindergarten teacher. He has two brothers, Stefan and Andreas. Schweiger was raised in a Catholic household.
He attended the University of Munich, where he studied acting. He also trained at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in New York City.

Although being a box office hit in Germany, his movie Keinohrhasen (2007) wasn't nominated for a German Film Award. The reason for this was that the German Film Academy didn't accept watermarked DVDs for the jury. But Warner Bros. does not distribute copies to juries without anti-piracy measures.
