Terry Gou is a Taiwanese business magnate and the founder of the Foxconn Technology Group, the world’s largest electronics contract manufacturer. He is one of the richest men in Taiwan, with a net worth of US$8.6 billion as of March 2021.

Gou was born in 1950 in Taipei, Taiwan, to a family of modest means. His father was a small businessman and his mother was a housewife. He has four brothers and sisters. He attended Taipei Municipal Zhongshan Elementary School and Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School.

In 1972, Gou graduated from National Taiwan University with a degree in electrical engineering. He then went on to study at Harvard University, where he earned a master’s degree in business administration in 1978.

After graduation, Gou returned to Taiwan and joined the plastics division of Hon Hai Precision Industry, a small manufacturer of electronic components. He was soon promoted to general manager of the division.

In 1988, Gou founded the Foxconn Technology Group, which quickly became one of the world’s leading electronics contract manufacturers. The company’s clients include some of the biggest names in the tech industry, such as Apple, Dell, HP, IBM, Lenovo, Microsoft, Nokia, and Sony.

Foxconn is best known for its massive manufacturing complex in Shenzhen, China, which employs over 1 million workers. The company has been criticized for its poor working conditions and low wages. In 2010, a series of employee suicides at the Shenzhen factory drew international attention to the company’s practices.

In recent years, Gou has been diversifying Foxconn’s business into other areas, such as artificial intelligence and driverless cars. He has also been investing in real estate and sports teams.

Gou is married to Taiwanese actress and singer Betty Liu. They have three daughters.
