Steven Hawley is an American astronaut who flew on five space shuttle missions. He was born on December 12, 1951, in Ottawa, Kansas, the son of Dorothy and Robert Hawley. He has two sisters, Nancy and Karen. He graduated from Ottawa High School in 1969 and received a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of Kansas in 1973. He then earned a master’s degree and a doctorate in astronomy from the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 1977 and 1981, respectively.

Hawley began his career as a research astronomer at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He joined NASA’s astronaut corps in 1978 and flew his first mission, STS-41D, in 1984. He went on to fly four more missions: STS-61C in 1986, STS-31 in 1990, STS-82 in 1997, and STS-93 in 1999. He has logged over 1,200 hours in space.

Hawley is married to fellow astronaut Sally Ride. They have two children, Bear and Brooke.

Hawley has been a member of the faculty at the University of Kansas since 2000. He is currently a professor of physics and astronomy. His research interests include observational astrophysics and cosmology.

Hawley has received numerous awards and honors, including the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, the NASA Exceptional Service Medal, and the American Astronautical Society Flight Achievement Award. He was inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame in 2010.
