Kierkegaard was born on May 5, 1813, in Copenhagen, Denmark. His father, Michael Pedersen Kierkegaard, was a wealthy wool merchant and his mother, Ane Sørensdatter Lund Kierkegaard, was a devoutly religious woman. Kierkegaard had seven siblings, four of whom died in infancy. His father died when Kierkegaard was just nine years old.
Kierkegaard was educated at the University of Copenhagen. He initially studied theology but later turned to philosophy. He became interested in the work of German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and began to write critiques of Hegelianism.
Kierkegaard’s first major work, Either/Or, was published in 1843. The book consists of two parts, the first of which is a philosophical work that explores the aesthetic and ethical stages of life. The second part is a collection of love letters written by a man to a woman.
In 1844, Kierkegaard published two more works, The Concept of Anxiety and Repetition. The former is a psychological work that examines the nature of anxiety and how it affects the individual. The latter is a philosophical work that discusses the importance of repetition in human life.
In 1845, Kierkegaard published his most famous work, Fear and Trembling. The book is a philosophical work that explores the nature of faith and how it relates to the ethical life.
Kierkegaard died on November 11, 1855, in Copenhagen, Denmark.
