He wrote extensively on topics relating to the individual, religion, and morality. His work had a profound influence on 20th-century philosophy, theology, and literature.

Kierkegaard was born on May 5, 1813, in Copenhagen, Denmark. His father, Michael Pedersen Kierkegaard, was a wealthy wool merchant and his mother, Ane Sørensdatter Lund Kierkegaard, was a devoutly religious woman. Kierkegaard had seven siblings, four of whom died in infancy. His father died when Kierkegaard was just nine years old.

Kierkegaard was educated at the University of Copenhagen. He initially studied theology but later turned to philosophy. He became interested in the work of German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and began to write critiques of Hegelianism.

In 1845, Kierkegaard published his most famous work, Fear and Trembling. The book is a philosophical work that explores the nature of faith and how it relates to the ethical life.
