Shawn Crahan is an American musician, producer, and director best known as the co-founder and percussionist of the Grammy Award-winning metal band Slipknot. He is also the founder of the record label imprints Science Records and Total Nonstop Action Records.
Born in Des Moines, Iowa, on September 24, 1969, Shawn Crahan was raised in a Catholic household with his parents and three sisters. His father worked as a truck driver and his mother was a housewife. Shawn Crahan began playing drums at an early age and was influenced by his older sister’s boyfriend, who was a drummer in a local band.
After graduating from high school, Shawn Crahan attended Kirkwood Community College where he studied art and photography. He then transferred to Iowa State University, but dropped out after one semester to pursue a career in music.
In 1992, Shawn Crahan and fellow musician Paul Gray founded the band Slipknot. The band released their self-titled debut album in 1999 to critical and commercial success. The album went on to sell over two million copies in the United States and was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
In 2001, Slipknot released their second album, Iowa, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. The album was certified platinum by the RIAA. Slipknot’s third album, Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses), was released in 2004 and debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart. The album was certified double platinum by the RIAA.
Slipknot’s fourth album, All Hope Is Gone, was released in 2008 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart. The album was certified platinum by the RIAA.
In 2010, Shawn Crahan directed the horror film Officer Downe, based on the graphic novel of the same name. The film starred Kim Coates as the titular character.
Shawn Crahan is married to Chantel Crahan and they have four children together.
