FactDuring the making of The Last Picture Show (1971), he often tagged along to watch filming with his elder brother Timothy Bottoms and one day the director Peter Bogdanovich decided to test screen Sam and eventually cast him as Billy.

Sam Bottoms was born in Santa Barbara, California, on October 17, 1955. The youngest of three boys, Bottoms was raised in a strict Catholic household. His father, Sam Sr., was an abusive alcoholic who often took his frustrations out on his family. Bottoms’ mother, Betty, was a homemaker who did her best to shield her sons from their father’s wrath.

Bottoms’ older brothers, Tim and Joe, were both successful actors. Tim Bottoms starred in such films as The Last Picture Show (1971) and Apocalypse Now (1979). Joe Bottoms appeared in films like The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976) and The Black Stallion (1979).

Seeing his brothers find success in Hollywood, Bottoms decided to give acting a try himself. He made his film debut in the 1971 drama The Last Picture Show. Bottoms’ performance caught the attention of director Francis Ford Coppola, who cast him in the Vietnam War epic Apocalypse Now (1979).

Bottoms’ career stalled in the 1980s, but he made a comeback in the 1990s with roles in such films as The Doors (1991) and The Thin Red Line (1998). He has also appeared in television shows like CSI: Miami and Justified.

Bottoms has been married three times. His first marriage, to actress Lisa Blount, ended in divorce. He was married to actress Jennifer Grey from 1987 to 1989. Bottoms has been married to actress Lori Singer since 1992.
