Thomas was born in Chicago, Illinois, on September 30, 1966. He is the son of former major league baseball player Ron Thomas and his wife, Sharon. Thomas has two brothers, Rob and Todd.

Thomas attended high school at Mount Carmel High School in Chicago. He played baseball and football there. Thomas was drafted by the Cubs in the 1984 Major League Baseball Draft.

Thomas made his MLB debut with the Cubs in 1988. He played for the Cubs for four seasons. Thomas was traded to the Giants in 1992. He played for the Giants for two seasons. Thomas was traded to the Astros in 1994. He played for the Astros for one season. Thomas retired from baseball after the 1994 season.
