Robert Klein is an American stand-up comedian, actor, singer and writer. Klein was born on February 8, 1942 in the Bronx, New York, the son of Frieda (née Wortman) and Benjamin Klein, a milkman. He has a sister, Barbara. Klein was raised in a Jewish household and graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School in 1959. He then attended Pennsylvania State University on a fencing scholarship, but transferred to Yale University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1963.
Klein began his stand-up career in the early 1960s, appearing in various clubs in New York City. He released his first album, Child of the Fifties, in 1972. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award. In 1975, Klein starred in the film The Sunshine Boys, alongside Walter Matthau and George Burns. He also appeared in the films The Owl and the Pussycat (1970), Catch-22 (1970), Some Kind of Hero (1982), The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984), Running Mates (1992) and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003).
Klein has been married twice. His first marriage was to actress Brenda Boozer from 1965 to 1975. They have two children: Amy Klein and Alexander Klein. His second marriage was to actress Nancy Dussault from 1982 to 1996. They have one child: Timothy Klein.
