Richard Thomas is an American actor. He is best known for his role as John-Boy Walton in the CBS television series The Waltons, for which he won an Emmy Award.
Richard Thomas was born in New York City, the son of Barbara and Richard Thomas. His parents were both of Welsh descent. He has two sisters, Lynn and Nancy.
Richard Thomas began his acting career at the age of seven, when he appeared in a television commercial for Ivory soap. He made his film debut in 1957 in the film adaptation of the play The Diary of Anne Frank. He also appeared in the films The Miracle Worker (1962) and It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963).
In 1971, Richard Thomas starred in the CBS television series The Waltons. The show was a huge success and ran for nine seasons. Thomas won an Emmy Award for his role as John-Boy Walton.
After The Waltons ended, Thomas appeared in a number of films and television shows, including the miniseries Roots: The Next Generations (1979) and the TV movie All Quiet on the Western Front (1979). He also starred in the short-lived TV series The Red Hand Gang (1977) and The Richard Thomas Show (1982).
In recent years, Thomas has appeared in the films Gangs of New York (2002) and Syriana (2005). He has also guest-starred on the TV series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2006) and Damages (2007).
Richard Thomas is divorced from his first wife, Alma Gonzales. He has three children from his second marriage, to Georgiana Bischoff: Richard Jr., Gabrielle, and Isabel.
