Bachman was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on September 27, 1943. His parents were both musical, and his father was a bandleader. Bachman began playing guitar at the age of 13. He was influenced by rock and roll artists such as Chuck Berry and Scotty Moore. He also cites classical guitarists Andrés Segovia and Django Reinhardt as influences.
Bachman’s first band was The Silvertones, which he formed with his brother Robbie in 1958. The band released one single, “Till We Kissed”, before breaking up in 1959. Bachman then joined The Guess Who in 1962. The band became one of the most successful rock bands of the 1960s, releasing such hits as “American Woman”, “No Time”, and “These Eyes”. Bachman left The Guess Who in 1970 to form Bachman–Turner Overdrive. The new band had immediate success with their debut album Bachman–Turner Overdrive, which included the hit single “Takin’ Care of Business”. BTO would go on to release six more studio albums over the next six years, including the million-selling Four Wheel Drive and Not Fragile.
Bachman left BTO in 1977 to pursue a solo career. He released his first solo album, Axe, in 1978. The album was a commercial success, reaching #5 on the Canadian album chart. Bachman would go on to release over 20 more solo albums over the next four decades. In 1984, Bachman rejoined The Guess Who for a reunion tour. The tour was so successful that the band decided to stay together and release a new album, So Long, Bannatyne. The album was a hit, reaching #1 in Canada and #2 in the United States.
In 1999, Bachman was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame as a member of The Guess Who. In 2000, he was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2018, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Bachman–Turner Overdrive.
Bachman has been married three times and has four children. His first marriage was to Diane Dufresne from 1967 to 1977. His second marriage was to Denise McCann from 1979 to 1990. His third marriage is to Rebecca Dewey, whom he married in 1992.
Bachman has an estimated net worth of $40 million. He has earned his fortune through his successful music career as a solo artist and as a member of three of the world’s most successful rock bands.

1 | [on himself and Burton Cummings in 1967] We went to England to be the new Beatles and we were the new flops. |
2 | [on hiring Dale Anne Brendon and Anna Ruddick of 'Ladies of the Canyon'] I told them: "Bonham, Moon and Baker did not play the drums. They attacked the drums. They hit the drums like they were hitting a guy in the face in a bar fight". Dale Anne and Anna said, "You mean we're allowed to do this?" I said, "Yes, you are"...We launch into a song and I look at Kevin [Shirley] and we're going "Oh, wow! This is fucking amazing! These chicks are blowing the windows out of the room!" |
3 | The power trios changed the world for me and for every other guitar player. You got an amp, you cranked it up, you learned one riff, you were Eric Clapton. You learned a couple of power chords, you were Pete Townshend and you started writing songs. It was amazing. And it still is! |
4 | [As a teenager, hearing his own song on the radio for the first time] You actually sit and listen to it and you're in awe and disbelief and you actually cry. We actually had tears. This is your Elvis moment, or your Beatles moment or your Madonna moment. |
5 | [on his radio show 'Vinyl Tap'] I kind of just go in and talk. So I'm not really dead-on correct when I mention the date when I met so-and-so - it might be June or it might be July - or January. I know it began with a J. |
6 | When I pull into a city and I rent a car and it's Nashville, or it's London, or I'm driving in the taxi to the hotel, and on comes one of my songs, it's like 'Oh my God, they're still playing these songs on the radio. And you still feel tearful and very grateful that somebody still likes these songs that you made up. |
7 | My songs are like cheap Neil Young copies. |
8 | I don't think that bands that make it on their first album are as strong as bands that don't: there is nowhere to go but down. |

1 | His surname is pronounced "Back-man." Since he knew radio DJs wouldn't pronounce the name correctly, he has accepted that the name in his band Bachman-Turner Overdrive is pronounced "Bach-man". |
2 | Currently resides on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, Canada. [2006] |
3 | Father of musician Tal Bachman. |
4 | Bachman-Turner Overdrive's record "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" was a 'novelty' record in as much as they recorded it with a deliberate stammer as a joke. Turns out it was one of the best selling records of all time. |
