Peter George Peterson (born June 5, 1926) is an American businessman, investment banker, and political figure. He served as the U.S. Secretary of Commerce from February 29, 1972 to February 1, 1973.

Early life and education

Peterson was born in Kearney, Nebraska, the son of Greek immigrants. His father was a grocer and his mother a homemaker. He has three sisters. He attended Kearney High School and then the University of Nebraska, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1947. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Career

After college, Peterson moved to New York City, where he began his career as a management consultant with Arthur D. Little. In 1957, he co-founded the firm of Lehman Brothers Kuhn Loeb, which later became Lehman Brothers, Kuhn Loeb Inc. In 1973, he left Lehman Brothers to become Chairman and CEO of Bell & Howell, a position he held until 1979. He then served as Chairman and CEO of Lehman Brothers from 1973 to 1984.

In 1985, Peterson co-founded The Blackstone Group, a private equity firm, with Stephen A. Schwarzman. He served as Chairman and CEO of Blackstone from 1985 to 2008. He is currently Chairman Emeritus of Blackstone and Senior Counselor at the firm.

In addition to his work in the private sector, Peterson has been active in public policy and philanthropy. He is the founder and chairman of the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, which is dedicated to increasing public awareness of the long-term fiscal challenges facing the United States. He is also a co-founder of the Institute for New Economic Thinking and the Council on Foreign Relations.

Peterson has been married three times. His first wife was Margaret Mary O’Hara; they divorced in 1971. His second wife was Joan Ganz Cooney; they divorced in 1987. He married his third wife, Elaine Fuchs, in 1988. He has four children: David, Michael, Mark, and Kimberly.
