FactOddly enough, when she and Michael McDonald first recorded the Burt Bacharach/Carole Bayer Sager song "On My Own", neither artist had even met. LaBelle recorded her part of the song in Philadelphia while McDonald completed his part in Los Angeles. Even after filming a video for the song, both singers had still not met. Not until after the song went to number one on the charts in June 1986 did the two artists finally meet when they performed *together* for the first time on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (1962).

Patti LaBelle is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and businesswoman with a career spanning over 50 years. She is the lead singer of the band Labelle and is known for her powerful vocal range and signature style. LaBelle began her career as a backing singer for artists such as James Brown and Aretha Franklin before embarking on a solo career in the 1970s. She has released numerous hit singles over the years, including “Lady Marmalade”, “On My Own”, and “If Only You Knew”. LaBelle has also appeared in several films and television shows, including A Soldier’s Story and American Idol. She has received numerous awards and accolades throughout her career, including the Grammy Legend Award and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. LaBelle has a net worth of $50 million.

Born Patricia Louise Holt on May 24, 1944, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Patti LaBelle is the eldest of three children born to Bertha Holt and Henry Holt. Her father was a railroad worker and her mother was a domestic worker. LaBelle began singing in church at a young age and went on to study music at the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduation, she began working as a backup singer for James Brown. She later toured with Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding. In 1970, LaBelle formed the band Labelle with Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash. The group released their debut album, Nightbirds, in 1974. The album featured the hit single “Lady Marmalade” which topped the charts in both the United States and the United Kingdom. Labelle went on to release several more albums before disbanding in 1977.

LaBelle embarked on a solo career in 1977 with the release of her self-titled debut album. The album featured the hit single “You Are My Friend” which peaked at number one on the Billboard R&B chart. LaBelle released her second album, Tasty Love, in 1978. The album’s title track peaked at number one on the R&B chart and became one of her signature songs. LaBelle released her third album, Winner in You, in 1986. The album featured the hit single “On My Own” which peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. LaBelle’s fourth album, Be Yourself, was released in 1989. The album featured the hit single “If Only You Knew” which peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. LaBelle has released several more albums throughout her career, including Burnin’, Live!, and Timeless Journey.

LaBelle has appeared in several films and television shows throughout her career. In 1984, she starred in the film A Soldier’s Story alongside Denzel Washington. In 2001, she appeared as a guest judge on the reality television show American Idol. LaBelle has also appeared on Broadway in the musicals Fela! and The Wiz.

LaBelle has received numerous awards and accolades throughout her career. In 1984, she was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. In 2005, she received the Grammy Legend Award.
