Pat Summerall was born on May 10, 1930, in Lake City, Florida. His father, John, was a Baptist minister, and his mother, Mavis, was a homemaker. He had two older brothers, John and Bill. Summerall was a star athlete at Lake City High School, playing football, basketball, baseball, and track. He was offered a football scholarship to the University of Florida, but turned it down to play for the University of Arkansas.
Summerall played for the Arkansas Razorbacks from 1949 to 1951. He was named an All-American in 1950 and 1951. He set a school record for most points scored in a season with 96 in 1950. After graduation, he was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the fourth round of the 1952 NFL Draft.
Summerall played for the Lions from 1952 to 1961. He was named to the Pro Bowl four times. He was traded to the Chicago Cardinals in 1962. He played for the Cardinals for one season before retiring from football.
After retirement, Summerall began a career in broadcasting. He worked as a commentator for CBS and Fox. He also did play-by-play for NFL games on CBS. He retired from broadcasting in 2013.
Summerall was married three times. His first wife was Katherine Denton. They were married from 1957 to 1959. His second wife was Cheri Lasalle. They were married from 1974 to 1977. His third wife was Nancy Moore. They were married from 1986 until his death in 2013. He had four children: two with Denton, one with Lasalle, and one with Moore.
Summerall died on April 16, 2013, at the age of 82.
