Pam Shriver is an American former professional tennis player. She was born on July 4, 1962, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Sallie and George Shriver. She has four siblings: Mark, Scott, Stephanie, and Sharon. Shriver was educated at the McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Maryland, and graduated in 1980. She then attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where she played tennis for the Bruins tennis team. She graduated from UCLA in 1984 with a degree in communications.
Shriver turned professional in July 1984 and won her first professional tournament that same month, the Virginia Slims of Los Angeles. She went on to win her first Grand Slam singles title at the 1988 US Open, defeating German player Steffi Graf in the final. She also won the women’s doubles title at the US Open that year, partnering with Zina Garrison. In 1989, she won the mixed doubles title at Wimbledon, partnering with American player Ken Flach.
Shriver retired from professional tennis in 1995 and was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2006. She has since worked as a television commentator and as an advocate for social causes such as literacy and women’s rights. She is also a board member of the Women’s Sports Foundation.
Shriver has been married twice. Her first marriage was to Andy Mill, a professional tennis player, from 1987 to 2001. They had three children together: Christina, Samantha, and Nicholas. Shriver’s second marriage is to George Lazenby, an Australian actor, whom she married in 2002. They have one child together: George Thomas Lazenby.
