Nuno Bettencourt (born September 20, 1966) is a Portuguese-American musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer. He is best known as the lead guitarist of the rock band Extreme.

Bettencourt was born in Praia da Vitória, Azores, Portugal, and moved to the United States with his family at the age of three. He grew up in Hudson, Massachusetts. Bettencourt’s father, Luís, was a classically trained violinist and his mother, Ruth, was a piano teacher. Bettencourt began playing guitar at the age of eight and soon began taking classical guitar lessons. He was influenced by Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, and Steve Vai.
Bettencourt attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. He met Extreme vocalist Gary Cherone at Berklee and the two formed a band called The Dream in 1985. The band released their debut album, Extreme, in 1989. The album was a success and spawned the hit singles “More Than Words” and “Hole Hearted”.
Bettencourt’s guitar playing has earned him critical acclaim. He was voted “Best Rock Guitarist” by Guitar World magazine in 1992 and 1993. In 1995, Bettencourt was ranked #10 on Guitar World’s list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”.
Bettencourt has also worked as a producer and songwriter for other artists. He produced albums for bands such as Boston and Rihanna. He has also written songs for artists such as Santana and Christina Aguilera.
Bettencourt is married to former Extreme bandmate Paul Geary. The couple have two daughters.
