Norman Smith was born on February 22, 1923, in London, England. His parents were Joseph and Florence Smith. He had two brothers and one sister. Norman’s early education was at a local primary school and then at Willesden County Grammar School. His father died when Norman was 14 years old, and his family could not afford to send him to university. Norman started his career as a clerk in an insurance office. He later joined the Royal Air Force during World War II.

After the war, Norman worked as a sound engineer for the BBC. He is best known for his work with the Beatles. Norman worked with the Beatles from 1963 to 1965. He was the engineer for their first four albums: “Please Please Me”, “With the Beatles”, “A Hard Day’s Night”, and “Beatles for Sale”. Norman also worked on the Beatles’ film “A Hard Day’s Night”. In 1965, Norman left the Beatles to work with Pink Floyd.

He was the engineer for their first album, “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn”. Norman also worked on Pink Floyd’s second album, “A Saucerful of Secrets”. He left Pink Floyd in 1968. Norman Smith died on March 3, 2014, at the age of 91.
