Nicholas Hammond is an American actor, director, and producer. He is best known for his roles as Friedrich von Trapp in the 1965 film The Sound of Music, as Peter Parker / Spider-Man in the 1977–1979 live-action CBS television series The Amazing Spider-Man, and as Colonel John Whitaker in the 1980s NBC television series The A-Team.
Hammond was born in Washington, D.C., the son of Margaret (née Shippen) and Eugene Hammond. His father was a career diplomat with the United States Foreign Service, and Hammond spent his childhood in various countries, including India, Pakistan, and Thailand. He is of English and Dutch descent.
Hammond began his acting career in the early 1960s with guest appearances on such television shows as Naked City and The Defenders. In 1965, he landed his first major role as Friedrich von Trapp in the film The Sound of Music. Hammond also appeared in the 1968 war film Where Eagles Dare, and the 1970 disaster film Airport.
In 1977, Hammond was cast as Peter Parker / Spider-Man in the live-action CBS television series The Amazing Spider-Man. He played the role for two seasons, until the show was cancelled in 1979.
In the 1980s, Hammond appeared in a number of films, including the 1981 adventure film Raiders of the Lost Ark, the 1982 science fiction film Tron, and the 1984 action film The A-Team. He also had a recurring role as Colonel John Whitaker in the NBC television series The A-Team.
Hammond has been married three times. His first wife was actress Sarah Torgov, with whom he had one child, a son named Nicholas. Hammond’s second wife was actress Leslie Ann Warren, with whom he had two children, twins named Ashley and Jason. Hammond’s third wife is actress Julie Adams, with whom he has one child, a daughter named Emma.
