Murray Hamilton was born on March 24, 1923, in Washington, North Carolina. His parents were James and Mary Hamilton. He had two brothers and one sister. His early education was at Washington High School. He then attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on a football scholarship. He played football for the Tar Heels from 1941 to 1942. After his freshman year, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

After the war, he returned to UNC and graduated with a degree in sociology in 1949. He then moved to New York City to pursue an acting career. He made his Broadway debut in 1950 in the play Mister Roberts. He also appeared in the film version of the play in 1955.

Hamilton’s breakout role was in the film The Hustler (1961) as the ruthless pool shark Minnesota Fats. He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance. He also appeared in the films The Graduate (1967), Catch-22 (1970), The Godfather Part II (1974), Jaws (1975), and Airport ’77 (1977).

In the 1980s, Hamilton appeared in several television movies and miniseries, including The Awakening Land (1980), The Blue and the Gray (1982), and North and South (1985). He also had a recurring role on the television series Dynasty from 1981 to 1989.

Hamilton’s last film appearance was in The Ghost and the Darkness (1996). He retired from acting after the film’s release.

Murray Hamilton died on September 1, 1986, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 63.

Throughout his career, Murray appeared in many other well-known films such as The Graduate (1967), Catch-22 (1970), The Godfather Part II (1974), Jaws (1975), Airport ’77 (1977), and The Ghost and the Darkness (1996).

In 1981, Murray landed a recurring role on Dynasty which he held until 1989.

After retiring from acting following The Ghost and the Darkness, Murray died on September 1, 1986, in Los Angeles, California at the age of 63.
