Fact
In his early thirties, he joined the CBS News team---as a correspondent in the London Bureau.
Morley Safer was born on November 8, 1931, in Toronto, Canada. The son of a Jewish clothing manufacturer, Safer was educated at the prestigious private boys’ school, Upper Canada College. He then attended the University of Toronto, where he studied philosophy and economics. After a brief stint in the Canadian Army, Safer traveled to England on a Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oxford University.
Safer began his career as a reporter for The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) in 1956. He was sent to cover the Suez Crisis and the Hungarian Revolution, and his reports from these events earned him a reputation as a fearless and intrepid journalist. In 1964, Safer joined CBS News as a correspondent, and he quickly established himself as one of the network’s most respected journalists.
Over the course of his more than 50-year career with CBS News, Safer reported on some of the biggest stories of the 20th and 21st centuries. He was one of the first journalists to report on the horrors of the Vietnam War, and his groundbreaking 1971 report on the U.S. military’s use of Agent Orange helped turn public opinion against the war. Safer also covered the Watergate scandal, the Iran-Contra affair, and the 9/11 attacks. He retired from CBS News in 2015.
Safer was married three times and had four children. His first marriage, to Jane Fearer, ended in divorce. His second marriage, to Diane Sawyer, lasted for 12 years. Safer’s third wife, Wendy Walker, was his longtime producer at CBS News.
Safer was awarded numerous honors over the course of his career, including 10 Emmy Awards and three Peabody Awards. He was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 2002.
Safer died on May 19, 2016, at the age of 84.
