Monica Abbott is an American professional softball player. She was born and raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her parents are both former professional softball players. Abbott began playing softball at the age of five. She played on her high school’s varsity softball team and was a four-time All-State selection. After graduation, she attended the University of Tennessee, where she was a four-time All-American and helped lead the team to the Women’s College World Series in 2007.

After college, Abbott signed a professional contract with the Scrap Yard Dawgs of the National Pro Fastpitch league. She played for the Dawgs for two seasons before signing with the Chicago Bandits of the same league. With the Bandits, Abbott won two NPF Championships (2016, 2018) and was named the league’s Pitcher of the Year three times (2014, 2016, 2018).
In 2019, Abbott signed a contract with the Houston Astros of Major League Baseball. She became the first woman to sign a professional baseball contract with a major league team.
Abbott has represented the United States in international competition on several occasions. She was a member of the gold medal-winning team at the 2008 Summer Olympics and the silver medal-winning team at the 2012 Summer Olympics. She also helped the United States win the World Baseball Softball Confederation Women’s World Cup in 2010 and 2018.
Abbott is considered one of the best pitchers in softball history. She has won numerous awards and accolades, including six NPF Pitcher of the Year Awards (2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018) and two Olympic medals (gold in 2008, silver in 2012). Her career earnings are estimated to be over $1 million.
