Michael Harrington was born in St. Louis, Missouri on February 24, 1928. His parents were both of Irish descent. He had four brothers and one sister. He attended Catholic schools growing up. He graduated from high school in 1946. He then attended the University of Notre Dame on a football scholarship. He played on the varsity football team for three years. He graduated from Notre Dame in 1950 with a degree in English.
Harrington began his career as a journalist. He worked for several newspapers in the 1950s. He then became a political activist. He was a member of the Socialist Party USA. He ran for Congress in 1962 and 1964. He was also the editor of the socialist magazine, The New Republic.
In the late 1960s, Harrington wrote a book called The Other America. In it, he argued that poverty was a major problem in the United States. The book was very influential. It helped to start the War on Poverty.
In the 1970s, Harrington became a professor at Queens College. He taught there until his death in 1989.
Harrington was married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth Meyers. They had two children together. His second wife was Stephanie Gervis. They had one child together.
Harrington died of cancer on July 31, 1989 at the age of 61.
