Michael Boatman is an American actor, writer, and producer. He is best known for his roles as lawyer Carter Heywood on the ABC sitcom Spin City, and as Principal Daniel Edward “Dan” Lewis, Jr. on the NBC/TBS sitcom Tyler Perry’s The Haves and the Have Nots.
Boatman was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on October 25, 1964, the son of Betty Jean (née Bowman), a teacher, and George Boatman, a military officer. He has two sisters, Leslie and Gwendolyn. He was raised in Colorado Springs, and attended high school there. He earned a B.A. in theatre arts from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1986.
Boatman’s first acting role was in the play The Mighty Gents, by playwright Richard Wesley. He made his television debut in the NBC soap opera Another World in 1987. In 1992, he began appearing as lawyer Carter Heywood on the ABC sitcom Spin City. He left the show in 1999, but returned for its final season in 2000–2001.
In 2013, Boatman began appearing as Principal Daniel Edward “Dan” Lewis, Jr. on the NBC/TBS sitcom Tyler Perry’s The Haves and the Have Nots.
Boatman has also appeared in films such as Love! Valour! Compassion! (1997), As Good as It Gets (1997), and The Peacemaker (1997).
Boatman is married to actress Marla Gibbs. They have two children: Michael Boatman Jr. and D’Angelo Boatman.
