Matt Molloy is an Irish musician and one of the world’s leading players of the flute. He was born in County Mayo in 1947 and started playing the flute at the age of nine. He studied at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin and later at the Guildhall School of Music in London.
Molloy has been a member of The Chieftains since 1974 and has also played with such artists as Van Morrison, Sting, and The Rolling Stones. He has recorded over 30 albums, both as a solo artist and with various ensembles. He has won two Grammy Awards and been nominated for four others.
Molloy’s playing style is characterized by a lightness of touch and a beautiful tone. He has a great command of the instrument and is able to play a wide range of music, from traditional Irish tunes to classical pieces.
Molloy has been married twice and has four children. He currently lives in County Mayo, Ireland.
