Mary Costa was born on April 5, 1930 in Knoxville, Tennessee. Her parents were of Italian descent. She had two brothers and one sister. Costa attended Knoxville High School, where she was a cheerleader and a member of the school choir. After graduation, she attended the University of Tennessee, where she studied voice.
Costa’s career began in 1952, when she was chosen to be the voice of Princess Aurora in the Disney film Sleeping Beauty. She went on to provide the voices for several other Disney characters, including Cinderella in Cinderella III: A Twist in Time and Tiana in The Princess and the Frog. In addition to her work for Disney, Costa has also had a successful career as a opera singer. She has performed at some of the most prestigious opera houses in the world, including the Metropolitan Opera and La Scala.
Costa has been married twice. Her first husband was actor William Reynolds, with whom she had two daughters. Her second husband is businessman Richard Costa. The couple has one son.
