Mary Carlisle (born February 3, 1914) is a retired American actress and singer. She appeared in more than 60 films during the 1930s and 1940s, and was a leading lady in many of them.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Carlisle was the daughter of an Irish-American father and a German-American mother. She began her career as a child model, and then started acting in films when she was just 16 years old.
Carlisle’s first major role was in the 1932 film, The Phantom President, opposite George Clooney. She went on to star in a number of successful films throughout the 1930s and 1940s, including It Happened One Night (1934), The Grapes of Wrath (1940), and To Have and Have Not (1944).
During her career, Carlisle also appeared in a number of musical films, including Kid Millions (1934), In Caliente (1935), and Broadway Melody of 1936 (1935). She also had a successful recording career, releasing a number of popular songs during the 1930s and 1940s.
Carlisle retired from acting in 1949, but made a brief comeback in the early 1960s with guest appearances on television. She has been married three times and has two children.
