Mark Harris is an American writer and journalist. He was born in Greensboro, North Carolina, on March 16, 1957, the son of a Baptist minister and a schoolteacher. Harris was educated at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he majored in English and journalism. After graduation, he worked as a reporter for The Greensboro News & Record and The Charlotte Observer. He also wrote for Esquire, GQ, and The New York Times Magazine.
Harris’s first book, Pictures at a Revolution: Five Movies and the Birth of the New Hollywood (2008), is a history of the making of the films Bonnie and Clyde (1967), The Graduate (1967), Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (1967), The Lion in Winter (1968), and 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). His second book, Five Came Back: A Story of Hollywood and the Second World War (2014), is about the five most prominent Hollywood directors who served in the military during World War II: John Ford, William Wyler, John Huston, Frank Capra, and George Stevens. Harris’s third book, Mike Nichols: A Life (2020), is a biography of the film director Mike Nichols. Harris is also the author of the play The Front Page (2016), which was produced Off-Broadway by the Atlantic Theater Company.
He lives in New York City with his wife, the writer Jennifer Szalai.
