Maria Bello was born on April 18, 1967 in Norristown, Pennsylvania, to Kathy, a school nurse and teacher, and Joe Bello, a contractor. She is the youngest of four children, with two brothers, Anthony and Joseph, and a sister, Mary. Bello was raised Roman Catholic. She attended Villa Maria Academy, a private Catholic girls’ school in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania. After graduating from high school in 1985, she attended Villanova University, where she majored in political science. She graduated from Villanova in 1989.
Bello began her career in television, appearing in episodes of the soap opera “Loving” and the medical drama “ER”. She made her film debut in the 1993 film “Dazed and Confused”. She has since appeared in such films as “The Crow: City of Angels”, “Assassins”, “Coyote Ugly”, “The Cooler”, “A History of Violence”, “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor”, “Pride and Glory”, and “Grown Ups”.
Bello’s performance in “A History of Violence” earned her a Satellite Award for Best Supporting Actress and a nomination for the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role. In 2006, she received a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama for her performance in “The Jane Austen Book Club”.
