Manu Chao (born José-Manuel Thomas Arthur Chao on June 21, 1961) is a French singer of Spanish descent. He sings in a number of languages and is known for his eclectic mix of styles, including reggae, rock, ska, and world music.

Chao was born in Paris, France, to a family of Spanish Basque and Galician descent. His father, writer and journalist Ramón Chao, was born in Vilalba, Galicia. His mother, Felisa Ortega, was born in Bayonne, Basque Country. Chao has two sisters, Sandra and Amelia, and a brother, Antoine.

Chao began his musical career in Paris as a member of the band Hot Pants. He later joined Mano Negra, a multiracial French rock band, with whom he achieved international success.

In 2000, Chao released his first solo album, Clandestino, which was a commercial and critical success. The album sold over two million copies and won the Best World Music Album at the 2001 Grammy Awards.

Chao’s second album, Próxima Estación: Esperanza, was released in 2002. The album was another commercial and critical success, selling over three million copies and winning the Best World Music Album at the 2003 Grammy Awards.

Chao’s third album, La Radiolina, was released in 2007. The album was another commercial and critical success, selling over four million copies and winning the Best World Music Album at the 2008 Grammy Awards.

Chao’s fourth album, Siberie m’était contée, was released in 2010. The album was another commercial and critical success, selling over five million copies and winning the Best World Music Album at the 2011 Grammy Awards.

Chao’s fifth album, My Country is the World, was released in 2014. The album was another commercial and critical success, selling over six million copies and winning the Best World Music Album at the 2015 Grammy Awards.

Chao has sold over fifteen million albums worldwide and has won five Grammy Awards. He is currently working on his sixth studio album, which is scheduled for release in 2019.
