Little Richard, born Richard Wayne Penniman on December 5, 1932, in Macon, Georgia, was a pivotal figure in the transition from rhythm and blues to rock and roll in the 1950s. His frenetic, pounding piano and wailing vocals on such classics as “Tutti Frutti” and “Long Tall Sally” defined the sound and spirit of rock and roll.
The third of 12 children, Penniman was born to a poor family in the African-American section of Macon. His father, Bud, was a brick mason and his mother, Leva Mae, was a domestic worker. Penniman began singing in his church choir at an early age and by his teens was performing with a local gospel group, the Mount Lebanon Singers.
In 1951, Penniman began his recording career with the R&B hit “Every Hour.” He followed that up with a string of hits for Specialty Records, including “Tutti Frutti,” “Long Tall Sally,” “Rip It Up,” and “Lucille.” In 1957, he had his biggest hit with “Good Golly Miss Molly.”
Penniman’s flamboyant stage persona, which included outrageous costumes and makeup, helped pioneer the rock and roll showmanship that would be adopted by later stars like Elvis Presley and James Brown.
Penniman’s career slowed in the 1960s, but he made a comeback in the 1970s with a series of live albums and tours. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.
Penniman continued to perform and record into the 21st century. His final album, “Here’s Little Richard,” was released in 2016. He died on May 9, 2020, at the age of 87.
Little Richard had a net worth of $40 million at the time of his death.
