The X Factor is a British reality television music competition to find new singing talent. The thirteenth series began airing on ITV on Saturday 27 August 2016 and ended on Sunday 11 December 2016. The live shows started on Saturday 8 October.

Dermot O’Leary returned as presenter for his ninth series while Simon Cowell, Sharon Osbourne and Nicole Scherzinger returned as judges. Louis Walsh was the only judge from the previous series to not return, after he was axed by Cowell. He was replaced by former judge Cheryl Fernandez-Versini.

Early Life

The X Factor was created by Simon Cowell in 2004. The show is produced by FremantleMedia’s Thames (formerly Talkback Thames) and Cowell’s production company Syco TV. It is broadcast on ITV in the United Kingdom and simulcast on Virgin Media One in Ireland. The “X Factor” refers to the undefinable “something” that makes for star quality. The series consists of auditions, in front of producers and then the judges with an audience; bootcamp; judges’ houses and then the live finals.

The show is primarily contested by aspiring singers drawn from public auditions. The winner is determined by television viewers voting by telephone, Internet, SMS text, and iTunes Store purchases of the contestant’s performances. The winner receives a recording contract with Cowell’s record label Syco Music, worth £1 million (in 2015), and with Sony Music worth between £500,000 and £1 million (in 2016), as well as a cash prize of £150,000 (in 2015).
