His self-titled debut album was released on April 30, 2013 via RCA Records Nashville. The album includes his debut single “Holler If You’re With Me” which peaked at number 28 on the Country Airplay chart.

Stevens was raised in Raytown, Missouri and graduated from Raytown South High School in 1987. He then attended Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, where he studied commercial music. However, he left Belmont before graduating to pursue a career in music.

Prior to auditioning for The X Factor, Stevens was a construction worker. He had also previously tried out for season 1 of the show but did not make it past the producers’ round. For his audition in season 2, he sang “Anything Goes” by Randy Houser and received a standing ovation from all four judges. During bootcamp, he was put into a group with Vino Alan and Jeff Gutt but they did not make it to the final 16. However, Stevens was chosen as a wildcard by Britney Spears and advanced to the live shows.

During the live shows, Stevens was mentored by L.A. Reid and was consistently praised by the judges for his performances. He made it to the final 3 along with Carly Rose Sonenclar and Emblem3. On December 20, 2012, he was announced as the winner of The X Factor USA and was awarded a $5 million recording contract with Syco Music and Epic Records.
