Lee Tamahori is a New Zealand film director, producer, and screenwriter. He is best known for directing the 1994 film Once Were Warriors, for which he won an Academy Award for Best Director.
Tamahori was born in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1950. His parents were Maori, and he was raised in a traditional Maori household. He attended primary school in Auckland and then went on to study at the University of Auckland. After graduation, he worked as a television director and producer in New Zealand and Australia.
In 1994, Tamahori directed Once Were Warriors, a film about a Maori family living in poverty in New Zealand. The film was a critical and commercial success, and Tamahori won an Academy Award for Best Director.
In the 2000s, Tamahori directed a number of Hollywood films, including The Edge (1997), Mulholland Falls (1996), and Die Another Day (2002). However, his career was derailed by a series of personal and professional problems, and he has not directed a film since 2007.
Tamahori has been married three times and has four children. He currently lives in Los Angeles, California.
