Kix Brooks was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, on May 12, 1955. His father, Leo Brooks Jr., was a doctor, and his mother, Barbara Brooks, was a homemaker. He has two older sisters, Nancy and Barbara. Brooks attended Catholic High School in Shreveport, where he played football and baseball. After graduation, he enrolled at Louisiana State University on a baseball scholarship. However, he left LSU after one semester to pursue a career in music.

Brooks began his music career as a member of the country-rock band Brooks & Dunn. The duo released their debut album, Brand New Man, in 1991. The album was a commercial success, reaching number one on the Billboard Country Albums chart and selling over five million copies. Brooks & Dunn went on to release twelve studio albums, of which six were certified platinum or higher by the RIAA. They also won numerous awards, including the CMA Award for Entertainer of the Year and the ACM Award for Top Vocal Duo.
In 2006, Brooks & Dunn announced that they were going on hiatus. Brooks subsequently released his debut solo album, New to This Town, in 2012. The album peaked at number four on the Billboard Country Albums chart and received positive reviews from critics.
Brooks has also appeared in several films and television shows, including the movies Flicka (2006) and Seven Days in Utopia (2011). He has also served as a judge on the reality competition series Nashville Star (2003-2008) and The Next: Fame Is at Your Doorstep (2012).
