Khandi Alexander (born September 4, 1957) is an American actress and dancer. She is known for her roles as Dr. Alexx Woods on the CBS medical drama CSI: Miami (2002–2012), as Yvette on the NBC sitcom NewsRadio (1995–1999), and as Dr. Maya Jackson on the NBC medical drama ER (1997–2002).
Early Life
Alexander was born in New York City, the daughter of Alma, a homemaker, and William Alexander, a businessman. She began her career as a dancer, appearing in the musicals The Wiz and Sophisticated Ladies. She made her screen debut in the 1981 film Sugar Hill, and her television debut in the NBC miniseries The Sophisticated Gents (1981).
Career
Alexander’s first major role was as Yvette on the NBC sitcom NewsRadio (1995–1999). She also had recurring roles on A Different World (1987–1988) and L.A. Law (1986–1987). From 1997 to 2002, she played Dr. Maya Jackson on the NBC medical drama ER. From 2002 to 2012, she played Dr. Alexx Woods on the CBS medical drama CSI: Miami.
In 2013, Alexander starred in the short-lived NBC drama series Do No Harm. She also had a recurring role on the ABC drama Scandal (2013–2014). From 2016 to 2018, she starred as Catherine Duke in the NBC drama series Chicago P.D..
In 2020, Alexander began starring as Mama Rose in the Fox musical drama series Filthy Rich.
Personal Life
Alexander has been married three times. She was married to Paul Burke from 1974 to 1975. She was married to Maurice Oldham from 1982 to 1986. She has been married to Keith Douglas since 2006. She has two daughters, Djanai and Kenya, and a son, Khalil.
